ABOUT THE BOOK: Andhra pradesh is one of the 28 states of the Indian union. Situated in the middle portion of Eastern half of the Indian peninsula, the state lies between the latitudes 12'37'N and 19°54'N and longitudes 76 46' E and 84 46' E. The total area of the state is 2,75,068 sq. km. It has 968 km sea coast line along the Bay of Bengal. The altitude ranges from sea coast to 1500 m above MSL. Annual rainfall ranges between 54 cm in south west to 200 cm in north east. Maximum temperature in summer ranges between 37°C and 44'C while the minimum temperature in the winter ranges between 14"C and 19°C. 412 medicinal plants have been enumerated.
The following sequence has been followed for the medicinal plants: valid name followed by synonym, family, brief description, distribution in Andhra Pradesh, flowering and fruiting season and medicinal uses. Active principle or chemistry has been given to some plants.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Prof.T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc., (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He travelled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Coordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology.
Professor Pullaiah has pulblished 20 books, 175 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra Pradesh; Taxonomy of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora ofRanga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District-, Flora of Kurnool; Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats—Vol. 1 and Vol. 2; Biodiversity in India—Vol. 1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects totalling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M.Phil, degree.
He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh. He is Vice-President of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, Councillor of Indian Botanical Society and Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
