ABOUT THE BOOK: This book has been written primarily to help the pharmaceutical manufacturers of Herbal Drugs in the form of standardised herbal extracts, volatile oils, oleoresins, phytochemicals and, drug formulations in the dosage form of tablets, Capsules, Powders, Ointments etc.
No comparison of herbal drugs can be made with synthetic allopathic drugs particularly in respect of identification, procurement, processing, quality control, storage and shelf life. This, inspite of the fact that about 25% of the allopathic drugs are based on herbs or other natural products.
Features peculiar to herbal drugs are:
    • Cultivation/Collection.
    • Time of collection and storage.
    • Identification
    • Sampling
    • Standarization in respect of active ingredients
    • Procesing
    • Quality Control
It is interesting to note that in the absence of long drawn battle to prove the pharmacological effeicacy and safety of herbal drugs, many countries have agreed to allow the use of herbal drugs which have been in use for centuries without any adverse effects.
It is well recognised that it is not easy to carry out quantitative analysis of all the known active constituents of herbal preparations specially where the preparation is a mixture of herbal drugs. As the active constituents are likely to vary in medicinal plants collected from various parts of the country, under various climatic conditions, time of collection etc. it is not advisible to use crude drugs as such in any formulation. A better alternative is to use standadized herbal extracts in solid, liquid, paste or powder from.
In this book an attempt has been made to identify medicinal herbs useful to mankind, basis of selection, processing methods, suggested dosage forms, plant and machinery requirements, testing, regulatory requirements etc.
This is probably the first book of its kind covering all aspects of Herbal Drugs from identification and pharmacological classification to final formulations. As far as possible I have refrained to include information of only acedemic interest so as to achieve the goal of practical applications in the wide field of medicinal herbs.
