Jatropha curcas for Biodiesel, Organic Farming and Health
ABOUT
THE BOOK: India needs availability of energy at a genuine cost for
economic development. Uncertain supplies and fluctuation in prices for fossil
fuel in international market need a search for renewable, safe and non-polluting
sources fuel. Developed countries like Germany and Australia, have ventured into
the use of vegetable oils as a substitute to diesel.
Government of India has recently encouraged farmers to grow more and more
biodiesel crops like Jatropha, karanj, mahua and neem. These non-edible
oil-bearing trees have potential of producing bio-fuel. The exploitation of
these resources in arid and semi-arid regions will be of vital importance for
the human population in developing countries. These will also help to increase
tree cover and will reduce desertification, soil erosion, droughts and floods.
These trees will also play an important role in C02 cycle of the earth since
they assimilate carbon dioxide.
Jatropha is an economically important oil-yielding crop as a biodiesel
substitute. The plant adapts well to semi-arid marginal sites. It can solve
unemployment and pollution problems all over world. It can be used for erosion
control. In recent years much attention has been paid to Jatropha cultivation,
therefore, many governmental and non-governmental agencies including farmers
have adopted Jatropha farming. However, there is a need of comprehensive
training to the farmers. Farmers and training organizers still need wholesome
information at one source.
The present book is an attempt to provide literature to nurserymen, Jatropha
growers, farmers, students and teachers of agriculture, horticulture and
forestry.
The literature available on Jatropha cultivation is scanty. A large number of
books, journals and proceedings of symposia and workshops Web sites have been
consulted. I acknowledge them. I do not claim originality in writing this book
except for the arrangement and presentation of the subject matter.
