THE BOOK: This book "Forest Tree Seed Production" is the outcome of
sincere efforts taken for compilation of information regarding seed production
technologies from numerous journals, periodicals, research papers and famous
books. This book covers a wide range of subjects with lot of references and also
includes description about the seed production technologies for 37 important
forest tree species.
The general morphology, flowering and fruiting behaviour, seed characteristics
and seed collection, seed storage and germination, seed handling and nursery
techniques of important forest tree species are presented in a simple and
readable manner with inclusion of many illustrations, tables, flow charts and
attractive photographs. Thus this book will provide an understanding of all the
aspects of forest tree seed production and help the students at UG and PG level,
researchers, scientists, forest officers and teachers to enrich their knowledge
in the field of forestry.
ABOUT
THE EDITOR'S:
1. Dr. K. Vanangamudi, is the Dean (Agriculture), Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University, Coimbatore, TN, India, a Seed Scientist has 24 years of experience
in the field of UG and PG teaching, research and extension service. He was a
postdoctoral fellow at Mississippi State University, USA during 1989-90. His
area of specialization includes forest seed technology and quality seed
production. He has authored 16 books in English and 30 books in Tamil and
published 35 research papers in International Journals & Newsletters and 136 in
National Journals. He has presented 163 papers in various National and
International conferences and seminars and published 82 popular articles in
English and Tamil. He has also contributed several book chapters in refereed
books. He has excellent research experiences by heading eight research projects
as a Principal Investigator funded by various National and International
agencies. He was the Project Head for Training programme for Self Help Groups
atAdhiparasakthi Agricultural College. He has guided 17 Ph.D. and 10 M.Sc.
students. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, he has been awarded
with 'Best Post graduate Teacher Award' in 1998, Best Scientist Award in
Agro-Forestry' in 1999 and 'Madras Agricultural Students Best Teacher Award for
Post Graduate Programme' in 2000, 'Best Seed Scientist Award' in 2003 from
Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar and 'Best Research Paper Award' in 2005
from Indian Society of Seed Technology, New Delhi. He was also a consultant of
Kerala Forestry Project. He is a recognized guide of Bharathiar University,
Coimbatore, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Periyar University, Salem
and Forest Research Institute, Deemed University, Dehradun. He has travelled to
U.S.A., Japan, Canada and U.K. in connection with forest research and education.
2. Dr. K. Natarajan, Assistant Professor of Seed Science and Technology,
Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu,
India. He has published 9 research papers in International and National Journals
and 9 popular articles. He has also presented 43 research papers in National
Seminars and Conferences. He has specialized in flower seed production.
3. Mr. T. Saravanan, Assistant Professor of Plant Breeding & Genetics,
Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu,
India has 5 years of experience in UG teaching, research, seed production and
extension services. He is a gold medalist in M.Sc. (Ag) in 1999. He has
published two research papers at International level and several conference
papers and popular articles at National level.
4. Dr. N. Natarajan, Professor of Seed Science and Technology working as
Deputy Director of Research in the Directorate of Research, Tamil Nadu
Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He has 20 years of experience in the field
of teaching, research and extension service. He has published 2 books, 35
research papers in International and National Journals and 20 popular articles
both in Tamil and English. He has also presented papers in National and
International Conferences and Seminars.
5. Dr. R. Umarani, Associate Professor of Seed Science and Technology,
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. She has 10 years of experience
in research, teaching and extension. She has authored 3 books and published 28
research papers in National and International Journals. She has also published 5
booklets and several popular articles. She has also presented many research
papers in National and International Seminars and Conferences.
6. Dr. A. Bharathi, Associate Professor of Seed Science and Technology,
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He has 10 years of experience in
research, teaching and extension. He has published 2 books, 16 research papers
in National and International Journals and 25 popular articles. He has also
presented many research papers in National and International Seminars and
Conferences.
7. Dr. P. Srimathi, Professor of Seed Science and Technology working
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. She has 22 years of experience
in the field of teaching, research and extension service. His area of
specialization includes forest seed technology, quality seed production and
storage. She has published 56 research papers in International and National
Journals and 35 popular articles both in Tamil and English. She has also
